Wallpaper is usually made of paper though it comes in vinyl also. Vinyl wallpaper is sturdier and moisture-resistant and is thus more suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. Vinyl may be laminated onto cloth or paper or it can be laminated on the cloth with paper backing.

Wallpaper can be applied over a lining of wallpaper already coating the walls to conceal the defects or it may be papered onto an existing painted or plastered wall.
