In landscaping, use of walls can create a great effect. To create a private area in the yard, walls can be used, especially around a private garden or the swimming pool. It helps to define the boundaries of space, for which it is created. Walls can be of stones, bricks and concrete blocks and with plants, hedges and shrubs. The materials used for landscaping walls, depend on the purpose and the effect you want to achieve. Landscaping walls can:
• Create privacy around the family sitting area, swimming pool, changing rooms. For this, walls should be about 10 feet.
• Act as windbreaker. Partition walls of medium height, help to direct wind flow from inside the house or to redirect wind to circulate inside to make it cooler.
• Be used as a seating place, if they are slightly broader with medium height.
• Build a flowerbed, when they are of lower height. If the walls run the entire length of the flowerbed, it gives a direction to the growth of these plants.
• Landscape a hillside. Stone or brick walls called the retaining walls, are a must to retain the soil
Fences:A fence is an element that can be used to landscape walls. Fences can be used to create security, privacy or as a decorative tool. Wire meshes or fences with chain link can be used for security purposes. The fences for security can be made with the seating facility. Fences can be built to form spaces where one can relax and enjoy the view, for instance, around the swimming pool, focal points like a landscaped pond or arbour or rock garden. Timber fences are very popular for securing privacy. A small wicket gate gives an attractive touch. If a fence is designed with horizontal members, creepers and crawlers can be allowed to grow on them.
Stonewalls:The retaining walls and the garden walls can be created, with stones. The shapes, cuts, size and appearances can be different. Selecting the stone depends on the height of the wall, the visual effect you want and your budget. For low garden walls, choose narrower stone while for higher walls, use stones that are thicker. You can use stones of different mix and sizes. Stones can be used to have a round look or a flat face, can be arranged precisely or flexibly. Also consider the scale and colours like grey or tan or their combination.
Brick walls:With bricks, it is possible to create attractive walls, at very little cost and effort. Brick walls can be used to originate a whole integrated look, to fulfil a dream, to have a durable low maintenance wall or to solve any problems. Bricks can be used in a variety of ways, like building retaining walls, to build a small one around the flowerbed and to border the flower garden. It can encase the water feature; draw visual attention, to avoid the wear out of grass in areas with lots of traffic or used as patio walls. Bricks come in different shapes, sizes and colours to meet every need. They can be arranged flatly, or can be stacked. It is easy to get a clean, finished look or to renew its looks, with very little effort.
Living walls:When plants, shrubs and hedges are used for landscaping walls, it is said to be “living walls.” Living walls can be designed with planting shrubs or hedges of the same type or a fence with vines or creepers. The vines filter sound, dirt and dust and keep the area cooler. Creepers and vines can fill the complete area, to give a fantastic display of colours. If the crawlers used are flowering ones, beauty can be enhanced. Using the fence, an impression of flowerbed can be created, by constructing a wall of right size. . Arches and arbours can also be created to frame areas or entrances. Retaining walls help to prevent soil erosion, to make pathways, add depth and texture, and fully alter the feel and shape of an environment. They can be used to develop aesthetic spaces, themes, and outdoor rooms or to stabilise a slope. Walls can be created using poured concrete, conventional stacked blocks or decorative blocks needing no mortar.
